Pulmonary & Sleep Medicine Division 

The Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine division at Dar Al Shifa Hospital deals with various disorders that affect the lungs, breathing and sleep. The services are provided in various settings including outpatient, inpatient and intensive care. The division is supported by cutting edge technology which optimizes the division’s capacity to diagnose and manage a diverse range of respiratory tract disorders by both invasive and noninvasive means.


Scope of Services:

The services of the division include diagnosis and management of patients with, but not limited to, the following:

  • Pneumonia
  • Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS)
  • Asthma
  • Tuberculosis
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  • Bronchiectasis
  • Cystic Fibrosis
  • Interstitial Lung Diseases
  • Pulmonary Embolism
  • Pulmonary Hypertension
  • Sleep Disorders


Major Functions of the Division:

  • Pulmonary Function Tests: are noninvasive procedures that provide information about lung diseases. It mainly includes spirometry, lung volumes, and diffusion capacity.
  • Sleep Study: It measures specific sleep characteristics that help to diagnose and treat a variety of sleep related disorders.
  • Bronchoscopy: It provides direct visualization of the airways to the lungs through a thin scope. It involves various procedures such as biopsy and lavage which serve for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Bronchoscopy with intubation can also be performed for patients in distress thus reducing the risk of trauma and decrease the need for sedation. 
  • Emergency and Intensive Care Services: These services are available round the clock for patients with respiratory distress and requiring either invasive or noninvasive assistive ventilation. A fully equipped intensive care unit (ICU), staffed by highly qualified multidisciplinary team is available to promptly manage critically ill patients and provide the required stabilization measures
  • Pleural services: It includes Aspiration of pleural effusion for analysis and treatment. It also includes insertion of chest tubes for Pneumothorax.
  • Arterial Blood Gas: Aspiration of arterial blood gas for different clinical conditions as indicated by patient presentation.
